A place for teenagers (10+) to learn a new skill, and build their confidence in sewing. We are running a few two day courses in the summer holidays, Where teens can learn to sew, or where teens who have already taken our course, can have a go at making clothes for themselves. At the Sewing Shed, we have a range of Bernina sewing machines that you are welcome to use, as well as all the tools you will need. But please feel free to bring your own sewing kit, if you have.
We have two clothes making courses, a body warmer, and slouchy/ pyjama trousers. As well as a short 'learn to sew' course, for beginners.
In the 'learn to sew' course, you will learn how to set up, thread, and use various stitches on a sewing machine. And then you will make your own tote bag, with the potential of adding your own embellishments and decorations!
You will learn:
- Setting up and threading a sewing machine
- basic stitches on a sewing machine
- sewing straight lines and curves
- sewing hems and seams
- ironing seams and hems
- cutting fabric following a pattern
- sewing on buttons and making button hole
- Working with a variety of fabrics
For Teens who have already done classes with us there is the option to try making your own clothes (If you have not taken classes with us before, but would like to try clothes making, you can take a 1-1 class or join our 'learn to sew' short course on July 28+29)
In both these courses you will learn to work from a pattern, learning how to read a pattern, how to it to fit you better, and how fabric grain works, and then cutting, sewing and creating a garment that is unique to you. You will learn to work with lightweight woven fabrics and use all of the skills from previous classes, to create your own, handmade clothes.
The Bodywarmer/ vest will be a simple but stylish sleeveless jacket, from your choice of woven fabrics, with the potential to add ties to the front, and a pocket. You can choose your own fabric colours and patterns to create a garment that you love. The pattern is included in the price but you will need to bring your own fabric (details will be sent to you)
The trousers will be a relaxed, stylish garment featuring an elasticated waistband, hems on the bottom of the trouser leg, and the potential for a pocket and a drawstring. The pattern is included in the price but you will need to bring your own fabric (details will be sent to you)

This class is taught by Ava, she has years of experience in the sewing industry, working as a seamstress in bridal, costume and interiors. She also has experience teaching both adult and kids sewing classes.
My daughter has just completed the teen sewing course with Ava who was very patient with her and made it a calm place for her learn in a small group. She gained the basics and made a lovely bag which has aspired her to complete some personal projects. She hopes to attend future courses to further build on her sewing skills. T.E.
